Christian Ciech's Penalties on Task 3

Mon, Aug 23 2021, 3:16:06 pm MDT

Just short of goal

Christian Ciech|Davide Guiducci|Filippo Oppici|Marco Laurenzi|Monte Cucco Piero Alberini International Trophy 2021|Moyes Litespeed RX|PG|Tullio Gervasoni|Wills Wing T3

I wondered in the last Oz Report why Christian got fewer time and arrival points than pilots who were slower than he was. Turns out if I had looked more closely I would have seen that he made the end of the speed section but just came up 90 meters short of the goal cylinder. His points were docked 20%.

Paraglider scoring takes away all your time points if you don't make it to the goal cylinder and there are no arrival position points.

Task 3 at the Monte Cucco Piero Alberini International Trophy 2021

Filippo Oppici|Marco Laurenzi|Monte Cucco Piero Alberini International Trophy 2021|Steven "Steve" Pearson|triangle

The task:

No Leg Dist. Radius
1 0.0 km 400 m
2 Ss 2.3 km 15000 m
3 36.8 km 5000 m
4 56.8 km 3000 m

6 113.3 km 2000 m
7 Es 119.4 km 1000 m
8 120.0 km 400 m

The task is almost an out and return from the start of the speed section (SS) to the end of the speed section (ES). The leg distances shown in the chart above are the optimized distances, those displayed on the map.

Three pilots had average task speeds of over 59 km/h (36.7 mph) in the speed section.

# Name Speed (km/h)
1 Filippo Oppici 59.4
2 Marco Laurenzi 59.2
4 David Gregoire 59.1

The optimized task distance between the SS and the ES is 116.939 km.

Steve Pearson asks the question, is this the highest task speed attained in a competition in Europe for a triangle or out and return task over 100 km?

The Pepe Lopes Medal

The Pepe Lopes Medal

Conrad

CIVL|Conrad Loten|Roberto Nichele

Swiss Nic <willswing> writes:

http://www.fai.org/civl-awards/civl-individual-disciplines

This Medal was established in February 1993 in memory of Pedro Paulo "Pepe" Lopes of Brazil who was the World Hang Gliding Champion in 1981. His energy and good humour played a big part in developing Brazil as an important centre for international competitions. He died during a hang gliding competition in Japan in 1991. The Medal may be awarded annually, on recommendation by the FAI Hang Gliding Commission, for outstanding contributions to sportsmanship or international understanding in the sport of hang gliding.

The year 2012 winner, my personal hero : 2012 Conrad Loten (New Zealand)

On the 24th of December 2012 at about 1.30, Conrad Loten and Roberto Nichele (Switzerland) aka ‘Swiss Nic’ launched hang gliders in the Hunter Valley NSW Australia. Conrad launched first successfully. Unfortunately Nic crashed below launch on a cliff face. Conrad landed and returned to launch by which time Nic had been hanging in his glider unconscious head down in 40C for some one and a half hours.

Emergency services had difficulty affecting a rescue. Conrad took it upon himself to climb down to Nic, as he assessed the situation as critical with Nic having sustained head injuries. Due to legal reasons, emergency services were not able to assist Conrad. Although he is a highly qualified medical practitioner he has no recue training.

With great difficulty and danger to himself, Conrad was able to get to Nic and using basic tools cut through his glider, raise his head and administer first aid. Eventually with Conrad’s help and insistence, Nic was extracted and evacuated to hospital. He was found to have cerebral bleeding and was placed on life support. He is now on a recovery program for his brain injury and hopes are held for a good recovery. There is little doubt that without Conrad’s selfless act, that went well beyond what is expected of a doctor, the result for Nic would have been considerably worse and most probably fatal.

Wills Wing T2C 144 Granted DHV Gütesiegel

The Wills Wing T2C 144 has been granted the Gütesiegel by the DHV, and is now certified in Germany.

Details, In German:

http://www.dhv.de/db1/source/technicdatareport1.php?lang=EN&templatesetid=-1&idtype=-2252&equptype=1&nopr=

The granting of the Gütesiegel by the DHV is the culmination of a seventeen month process that began when Carsten Friedrichs was refused entry into the 2012 German Open competition because his T2C 144, although HGMA certified, did not have the DHV Gütesiegel, and he was therefore not allowed to fly. There have been multiple efforts over the last 35 years to have Germany recognize hang glider airworthiness certification from authorities outside of Germany, such as the British (BHPA) certification and the (international) HGMA (Hang Glider Manufacturers Association) certification. None of these has yet been successful – in Germany it is still required to have a Gütesiegel issued by an authorized German testing house (of which the DHV is one).

Over the years, the DHV has offered varying levels of accommodation and assistance to manufacturers holding other certifications in their pursuit of a DHV Gütesiegel attesting to certification to the German LTF standards, but until now none of these has eliminated the need for DHV testing of the glider to the German LTF standards, and none has therefore addressed the problems and additional burdens for manufacturers that result from requiring certification to an additional and somewhat different set of standards. Following his disqualification from the German Open, Carsten began a campaign to achieve a DHV Gütesiegel for the T2C 144 based on DHV acceptance of the glider’s HGMA certification status. What the DHV eventually agreed to was something less than that; to accept the HGMA pitch and load testing results as valid evidence of airworthiness, and that with the submission of complete documentation of the glider’s manufacturing details, as contained in the HGMA Record Of Compliance, and a DHV flight test to establish for DHV purposes a classification of the glider’s flight behavior, the DHV would then issue the Gütesiegel for the glider.

Carsten pursued this process relentlessly over a period of 15 months, with significant support from Wills Wing’s Swiss importer Roberto Nichele, and with ongoing technical support from Wills Wing, and finally he was successful in obtaining the DHV Gütesiegel for the T2C 144.

The most straight forward and most obvious solution to this situation would be for Germany to accept, without any additional requirements, HGMA and BHPA certification, in the same manner that HGMA and BHPA certification are accepted in other countries around the world, and in the same manner that German certification is accepted outside of Germany without the addition of any further requirements. This is what the CIVL does for competition – BHPA, DHV and HGMA certification are accepted equally under FAI Section 7A rules. In the meantime, we’d like to congratulate Carsten on his significant accomplishment, and we thank Carsten and Nick for their extraordinary efforts in this matter.

Swiss Nic Hurt on Christmas Eve

Fri, Dec 28 2012, 9:01:41 am PST

In the Hunter Valley

Cameron Tunbridge|Conrad Loten|Heather Mull|photo|Roberto Nichele|Tascha "Tish the Flying Fish" McLellan

Cameron Tunbridge «Cameron Tunbridge» sends this note from Heather Mull:

UPDATE ON SWISS NIC:

As many hang glider pilots will now be aware, on 24th December Swiss Nic (Roberto Nichele) had a failed hill launch in NSW Hunter Valley, Australia. First aid was given on site by Conrad Loten (hang glider pilot and emergency room doctor at John Hunter hospital) and Nic was transferred to the John Hunter hospital by helicopter. He sustained internal trauma to the head and was put into the intensive care unit in an induced coma and on a ventilator.

With some progress over the last days in the form of responding to voices with hand squeezes, Conrad recommended friends visit Nic to keep the stimulation process going. Mart and I have been visiting Camo, so today (the 28th) we contacted the hospital and all went to visit this afternoon. The timing was great, as when we arrived they were busy taking his ventilator tube out for the first time. We were able to see Nic straight away and spent a couple of hours with him. He was groggy and it was obviously difficult for him to open his eyes, but he opened them on several occasions and recognised who we were - communicating to questions mainly with hand gestures and a reasonably firm hand grip. He slept much of the time whilst his body copes with the recovery process.

The whole time we were there, Nic was able to breathe normally apart from some supplemental oxygen, but he even took that mask off for a while when the tube came out. He has a chest infection as well, so his physiotherapist was wanting him to take deep breaths as often as possible and cough to get the muck up from his lungs. He could understand everything we were saying to him and even managed to whisper and understand some words in four different languages. His sense of humour is still intact, as when Mart made a comment about the difficulty of the Swiss language, Nic slowly lifted his hand and definitely gave him the "bird." Nic sparked up noticeably when the guys took some photos of him for his girlfriend Natalia and the doctor also contacted Natalia while we were there. Natalia was able to talk to Nic.

To summarise what the doctor said to us, Nic has had a severe impact to the head which will take a long recovery - many months, and the extent of the recovery depends on the individual. Plans are already under way for his medically accompanied return to Switzerland by aeroplane (he also has travel insurance). If all goes well, this may be within the next week. We were very happy to see the amount of progress he made just today - breathing on his own again and communicating a little with us. As we left, Tish and Chris came in to visit again. So if you live in the area, the doctor suggested a roster of visitors could be made up so that he is getting lots of stimulation over the coming days. Things certainly looked much more positive for Nic today than several days ago, and we'll all keep our fingers crossed now for a speedy and full recovery.

The weather was a bit too iffy for a task today. Moderate breeze on the ground. 40 km/h (25 mph) up at 3,000' (compared to 18 mph yesterday). Rain during the day, clearing, then overcast. Nearby cu's, but no lift over the airfield.

We gave it a good go, but called it when it got too late without a good chance of getting good for a fair task.

Tom Lanning, Jochen Zeischka, Curt Warren, Dave May, Dustin Martin, Filippo Oppici, Kraig Coomber, Jonny Durand, Roberto Nichele, Dean Funk, Mark Frutiger, Alex Cuddy, Larry (Killa Bee) Bunner, Ricker Goldsborough, Mitch Shipley, Davis Straub, Mike Glennon, Joe Bostik, Ollie Gregory, Patrick Kruse, Jeff Shapiro, Greg Dinaur, Allen Stanish, Charles Allen, Bill Reynold, Kathryn O’Riordan, Zac Majors, Glen Volk, Carl Wallbank, Lauren Tjaden

Registration for the Rob Kells meet that was supposed to open on the 10th still apparently isn't open. Maybe you pilots who fly regularly at the Ridge could get James Tindle into first gear. I get very tired of having to call him each year, when I can email everyone else and actually get a response.

Wills Wing Demo Days in Switzerland

In August

calendar|Jeff O'Brien|PG|Roberto Nichele

Jeff O'Brien writes:

Roberto Nichele, a.k.a. "Swiss Nick" will have a full lineup of Wills Wing gliders to demo beginning in August 2010. Nick flies throughout Switzerland, most often in scenic Interlaken. A breathtaking Mecca for outdoor activities and a great opportunity to see and fly the latest Wills Wing offerings.

Gliders offered for demo:

T2C 144 ,T2C 154, U2 160, U2 145, Sport 2 135, Sport 2 155, Falcon 3 170

From Nick: "The Swiss hang gliding federation has started a project called, "hang gliding revival" and has several schools involved in the effort. In addition, there is quite a strong interest in hang gliding from paraglider pilots."

A calendar of demo events to follow as interest is generated.

Situational Awareness, Part 3

Narrowing the focus

Corinna Schwiegershausen|Roberto Nichele|Rohan Taylor|situational awareness

Getting across the valley was not easy. It meant flying into a nine mph head wind with a glide ratio of eight to one. I lost a couple of thousand feet. Just as Julia got to the lower part of the ridgeline on the western side she found 20 fpm. I was 1.3 kilometers behind her and 1,700' higher. Rohan was 1.3 kilometers behind me and 100' feet higher.

Julia lost the weak lift after one turn and I saw her searching, turning wide circles in various directions and not finding anything. I was not happy about that. I continued to head for higher ground up the ridgeline to her south to get in a better position (I thought) to catch the lift. I was losing 300 fpm.

Behind me I didn't see that Rohan had stopped at the edge of the ridge and started to search for some lift that he must have felt. Julia was not finding anything. I was dropping like a stone.

I continued up the ridgeline to the south falling fast. I watched behind and 1000' below me as Julia continued to be unsuccessful. I was at 3,000' now, just off the trees as the ridgeline rose to the south. Rohan maintained his altitude and then found 200 fpm as he climbed to 4,000'. I didn't see him as I was focused on Julia, the ridge line, the trees, and the fact that I was falling fast and needed to get out of this trap before I was caught with no where to land.

Turning back at 2,900' I didn't notice that Julia was now turning at 2,200' on the windward side of the ridge. I had last seen her bail over the back presumably into the Kiewa valley. Focused on getting out of my bad situation I didn't notice that Rohan was at 4,100' a little over a kilometer away turning. I missed two chances to get up because I couldn't focus on anything other than getting safely away from the trees.

I  survived for another twenty minutes in the Kiewa valley before landing next to the Ceccanti winery.

Taking the chance going across the valley was taking too much of a chance (although it worked out fine for Rohan, who won the day). While I previously had the whole ridge line to search for thermals (at least twenty kilometers one way inside the entry start cylinder, and forty five both ways), now I only had a couple of kilometers within which to find thermals.

I had found myself racing hard (as did everyone else) down and back on the ridge because I was well above the ridge line. Once I crossed the valley I would be low and confined to a much reduced area.

Other than Julia and Rohan, the pilots I had been flying with stayed with the ridge, even went across the Coral Bank gap, which is not known as a great area for thermals, thinking that they would have a better chance to finding lift. They were right. Oli and Corinna (and Nick) went much further south back toward the launch before they crossed much wider areas of the Kiewa valley.

Because I was relatively high, because the valley was narrow at that point, because crossing where I did kept me closer to the course line, because I saw the pilots ahead of me not doing well in an area where we had discussed climbing well, because Julia was crossing the valley and that upped my chances of getting up once I crossed, because I had been doing well and flying fast, and because I wanted to get into the lead I took a chance that I likely shouldn't have taken. I didn't measure the risk correctly, going on a gut feeling.

I didn't mention Roberto Nichele (Swiss Nick) who also crossed the valley when the three of us did. He was between Rohan and I and six hundred feet higher than Rohan and I, as I got to the western ridge line. Despite the fact that he and Rohan were on almost the exact same track, he missed the thermal that Rohan found, turned around when I did (but 1.1 km back, east and downwind and 800' higher), missed Rohan's thermal again although going right to it, and fled back to the eastern ridge line to get back up.

Nick did well for himself that day, going back south to the Mt. Emu launch area, getting up under the clouds that we had seen in the distance when we were on launch and then crossing the Kiewa valley high. He was third that day and third over all.

Davis, Nick, and Rohan come to the hill side on the western side of the Kiewa valley:

pre-Worlds - who's going? »

150 out of 250

Ben Dunn|Davis Straub|Dustin Martin|Jeff O'Brien|Jeff Shapiro|Pre-Worlds 2011|Ubaldo Romano|Wills Wing T2C|World Pilot Ranking Scheme|Worlds 2023|Zac Majors

The best guess so far: http://www.cucco2011.org/test_romano/ Click Pilot Info, then Pilots List. Based on December 2, 2009, WPRS ranking, will change when January ranking is available. US pilots chosen to go to the pre-Worlds, so far:

Zac Majors, Wills Wing T2C-144
Dustin Martin, Wills Wing T2C-144
Jeff O'Brien, Wills Wing T2C (144 or 154)
Davis Straub, Icaro Laminar MR1000
Jeff Shapiro, Wills Wing T2C-144
Derreck Turner, Moyes Litespeed S5
Ben Dunn, Moyes Litespeed

Each nation gets up to five pilots independent of WPRS ranking. If more than five pilots from one country apply for the pre-Worlds, then the top five in that nation as per their January 2010 WPRS ranking are allowed in. When all those nations' slots are taken (some nations won't have five slots because less than five pilots pre-registered from that nation, for example, Turkey), then the remaining slots are available by WPRS ranking to the pilots who pre-registered.

Turns out a lot of pilots from Italy pre-registered and they have a lot of good WPRS rankings, and so fifteen pilots are coming from Italy. Derreck Turner and Ben Dunn got in with their WPRS rankings. Many US pilots did not.

Everyone has to get their entry fee in with ten days (January 17th) or they go to the end of the line. Starting on the 17th, pilots are chosen for the now empty slots by pre-registration date.

The actual five man teams will be decided at the competition.

Update: The January WPRS ranking it up and the pilot list will be updated soon.

Apparently hang gliding is not dying at the level of World competitions (or at least pre-Worlds) The Italian based pre-Worlds is over subscribed already, just a few days after opening the registration to the waiting list. The local regulations state:

Registration will open on 2nd November 2009. Priority will be given to national teams of up to 5 pilots per country.

Places will be allocated starting from 7th January 2010 to pilots on the waiting list.

Allocation will be based on WPRS ranking on 1st January 2010 followed by order of registration for any unranked pilots.

As from 7th January, all confirmed pilots will have ten days time in which to pay the registration fee, in order not to lose their priority position in the pilot list.

Therefore, confirmed pilots whose receipt of payment does not reach the organizers by 17th January, will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list.

All other pilots accepted afterwards, will have 10 days to pay the registration fee before their place is reallocated to another pilot.

Looks like we'll be flying with some of the best pilots in the World. I suspect a bunch more will be signing up, given the numbers going to Forbes from overseas.

Sign up here: http://www.xcflight.com/20.html

There is a limit on the number of pilots who can fly in the Bogong Cup, so sign up ASAP. It was a great meet last year (see the reports in the Oz Report starting here).

Swiss Wills Wing Prices

Swiss prices

Just use the US price.

Nichele Roberto|Roberto Nichele|Wills Wing T2C

Roberto Nichele «nirosoft» writes:

Due to the always changing and very interesting US dollar, Wills Wing prices in Switzerland these days are quoted daily this way:

(The suggested US$ retail price plus approximately 500 US$ for packing and transport) times 1.076 (The Swiss VAT is 7.6%) times current US$/CHF exchange rate. This is quite easy and explainable to our customers. They can find the Wills Wing prices here: http://www.willswing.com/dbase/inventory_hgs.asp

So the all basic cost for a T2 without any options is ~7400.- CHF (~4700.- €'s) The T2C with all options included today would be ~9500.- CHF (~6000.- €'s)

To fix a given price we need 2/3 of the price in advance.

Aeros prices are also not too far away from this amount.

Nirosoft (Nirosoft GmbH) is my own company for the last ten years. The name is build by Nichele Roberto SOFTware :-) My main business is offering IT resources for mainframe development and analysis (IBM-MVS, DB2, PL1, IMS, etc), so that's what I work usually, programming old systems on black screens with green characters.

For the last six or seven years Kilian and I have been the official Wills Wing dealer for Switzerland. I run the hang gliding business over my Nirosoft company, with Kilian as partner, as he does most of the test flying and repairs. Last year we sold twenty five gliders!

The basic Aeros Combat L in Switzerland is 5950 € including the Swiss VAT and shipping. This would be 1200 € higher than the basic Wills Wing T2 as seen above.

Roberto spoke with Markus Eggimann «cloudbase», the Swiss Aeros dealer, and found that a "fully equipped" Combat L goes for 6965 €, while a Wills Wing T2C costs 6000 €. These prices include Swiss VAT at 7.6% and shipping to Switzerland.

Have I got this right? Please send in any corrections. I would especially love to hear from any manufacturers or dealers/distributors. More soon.

Big Spring - a 98.6 degree (mile) triangle »

Big Spring

Back against a 11 mph head wind.

The flight and task on the HOLC and on Google Maps/Earth

Results.

With the standard August North Texas weather having returned yesterday and forecasted to stay with us during the competition, we get back to calling tasks that take advantage of the reliable and consistent lift. The task committee can't decide between a large (160+ mile) dog leg and a 98.6 mile triangle. We propose a vote of the pilots, and they decide for the triangle.

I forecasted thin cu's, moderate south winds (10-12 mph), no overdevelopment, 600-700 fpm lift, and comparatively warm at cloud base - 54 degrees.

Responding to pilot requests we put a twenty five mile entry start circle around the first start point off to the northwest. This allows for a little strategy and I take advantage of this.

I'm off first, which used to be part of my strategy, which I seemed to have relaxed a bit on the first three days. I got off high at 2,500' AGL under a cloud, and low an d behold finally there was good lift under a cloud near the airport.

Now the tug pilot was very kid and took me to the west of the airport in the general direction of our start and first turnpoint. Since I was high and getting higher I had the chance of heading due west and escaping my compatriots, perhaps unseen. With the strong south wind, the ticket would be to get twenty five miles due south of the start point before the start window opened. Since I started early, I had a chance to do just that.

I snuck off to the west. I knew that others would figure out this strategy, but I thought that if I got our of their view I wouldn't be an attractive nuisance and I could disappear. The only problem was this would put me out on my own, but I needed to win big to catch up, so taking chances was what I needed to do.

This strategy worked, and I jumped from cloud to cloud staying reasonably high and not seeing any of my flying buddies. Just before the start time at 1:30 I got a glimpse of Jim Yocom and another rigid wing pilot, but they were down wind of me, so I had the advantage.

The winds were strong out of the due south and the cu's were scattered and thin but the lift was good and that meant it was quite possible to run down wind to little wisps quite a long ways away. Fortunately many of them were working.

After I got the first turnpoint I saw Mark Stump coming toward me and I got the feeling that my strategy had not worked at all. Where were all the rest of the rigid wings? Were they already further out on the course line?

The second leg was almost straight east, so it was cross wind. But again the lift was good and this made it possible to punch ahead into the wind while gliding. The cu's were thicker and closer than on the first leg so the probability of getting up improved even with the cross wind.

Half way out Mark and I were joined by a flex wing pilot and I was thinking, oh my god, are we really that slow that the pilots who started half an hour behind us have caught us? Geez. We were screaming up in the best lift of the task, averaging 800 fpm, and then the flex wing pilot pulled in his VG cord and headed in the opposite direction. Whoa, he hadn't gotten to the first turnpoint yet and was way too far to the north given the south wind.

The strong lift allowed for me to leave Mark behind and get to the second turnpoint with little difficulty. As I approached the turnpoint I noticed that there were lots of clouds on the way back to the airport. It looked good. Once I made the turnpoint I realized that these clouds formed a cloud street, a very long cloud street that stretched south and north of me. I'd seen this cloud street before in previous meets at Big Spring.

The cloud street didn't exactly go back to the airport but to the east side of Big Spring. Still it was a great little lift highway and I used it for all it was worth. I stayed under it until I was almost due northeast of the airport and would have mostly a cross wind component going into goal.

Climbing at 400 fpm I left when my 5030 said it is 9.8:1 to goal. Gliding at 42 mph I headed across the town of Big Spring from the refinery and got a very good view of it as I came into goal with 250 feet to spare after an eight and a half mile glide. That was close enough for me. I was the first pilot into goal, much to my surprise.

Eighteen minutes later Mark Stump and Jim Yocom came in. Campbell and Oliver came into together about half an hour after I came in just as the flex wing pilots started to come in.

Andre Wolf was the first flex wing pilot followed by Attila, Brett, Kraig, Jonny, Bruno, Chris Smith, Mario and Leo (see the results above). A few pilots landed a little bit short, including Nene, Bubba (whose on the task committee), Robert Reisinger, Phil Bloom, and Gerolf.

David Glover had the top thirty pilots (at least) start the task at 2:15, and all but one pilot, Jim Prahl, who made goal, started at that time.

The single surface task was a sixty mile task out to the north, northwest with a turnpoint at La Mesa. The winner, and the only pilot to make goal was Anne-Odile Thomas on an Icaro Relax. She told me before going out to fly the task that there was no way that she was going to make it and that she'd probably just land a short ways out from the airport. Wow!

The Sport Class was sent 90 miles north to the goal at Town, an airport just south of Lubbock. The top sport class pilots haven't returned this evening, so we assume that they made it.

Roberto Nichele had a discussion with a dust devil that he lost. He told David Glover that he tried three times to enter into a dust devil at 1000' AGL and got spit out all three times. He tried one more time and the dust devil tiring of this foolishness tossed him about bad enough that Nick through his chute in order to soften his landing. If you see dust here in Texas you can be assured that the lift is a bit too strong. This is not Chelan with its very powdery soil.

Tomorrow looks like even stronger south winds so we might be going long down. There were multiple long thick cloud streets over Big Spring late this afternoon and well into the evening. We would all love to get under one of those clouds and just glide for as long as the cloud lasts. That takes a good weather forecast in the morning.

The last day's task was an 85.8 km task with goal at the Villamartin airstrip
TP 1 Montellano Castle
TP 2 Horacio Airstrip
TP 3 Puente de la Nava

The day looked really promising with pilots getting strong lift and high over launch 2200m, but once out of the mountains the conditions were quite different with weak scattered thermals where they battled to just stay up. Gerolf said that he and Manfred both got way low at one point, about 50 m. Attila won the day when he and Tommy flew 3 km back to the launch after the last turnpoint to make goal.

From 1900 m with strong tail wind they headed off on final from 20 kms out. 20 pilots made goal. Attila, Manfred, Franc Peternel, Andre, Paris, Tommy, Carl Wallbank, Martin Harri, Ian Miskin, Bob Baier, Rafael Bossas Cerda, Jean-Charles Balembois, Antoine Boisselier, Robert Reisinger, Gerolf, Gordon, Jean-Francois Gerard, Mario Alonzi, Guido Gehrmann, Roberto Nichele. No Australians in goal! But 4 French and 4 British pilots so the French pipped us at the post for the 3rd place teams medal.

I didn't make goal to see Manfred come in but heard there was a huge cheer when he crossed the goal first.

Congratulations again Manfred!

There was some drama on the hill before launch, with dust devils flying around. A big one got Viktor's glider, we watched it get lifted 50 feet in the air flip over and sail down the face of launch. Bobby and Steve are repairing it this morning.

Nene Rotor was not able to fly yesterday as he has a broken foot in 3 places. He was walking down to the task board and lost his footing and broke his foot! He has a plaster cast to his knee.

Well it's all over and we are all looking forward to the presentation this evening. Last night there was a rock festival on the local football field called Delta Rock 2000, with live rock bands, and stacks of people. The town of Algodonales has been fantastic, friendly and supportive of the competition in their town of 6000 inhabitants.

Getting use to the Spanish culture has been different. Siesta from 2-6pm where everything closes down except the bars and cafes, the streets are barren with everyone lunching and relaxing in the cool to escape the hottest part of the day. This was my first trip to a non English speaking country so the language barrier was fun, not too many people speak English, ordering a meal was sometimes by making animal noises! Moo!!! The organisation was excellent, Juaki and his team did the best they could with the difficult weather conditions, everyone keeps telling us the weather patterns have been unusual for this area. But that's life with hang gliding competitions.

I have attached 1 photo, and am more than a little embarrassed that I don't have a photo of Manfred! But I do have one of the Moyes boys at goal yesterday!
