Flight of the day - practice day

The day before the Rob Kells Competition

Davis Straub|Florida Ridge|Kerry Lloyd|Rob Kells|Rob Kells Competition 2010|video

The day started sunny with cu's and a bit of easterly wind but not too strong. A couple of pilots flew before 10 AM, and one was able to float around for 45 minutes. Then the thicker clouds came in from the east, which still looked soarable but weren't enough soarable early on.

The winds picked up out of the east and the cu's and higher clouds thickened up and blocked almost all the sun. No one seemed that interested in flying. Then about 2 PM a little sunlight started to appear. Steve Larson on his Exxtacy and a few other pilots got up and soared low in 200 fpm lift for maybe 45 minutes.

I took off after they all landed and found bits and pieces for almost half an hour of flying. As I was already setup I decided to go again although everyone who had launched after me was down. Kerry Lloyd pulled me into the lift this time to the south east of the field and no matter how shaded the ground was, the sky and the cu's were working. I climbed out to 3,300' and kept finding lift.

After an hour I had to get down for a meeting (that later got postponed) and as I came over the field at 600', there was good lift again and I climbed back to 1,500' before I really had to bale on the thermal and go and land. It was still hard to get down.

Plenty of pilots launched later but by then it was too late.

Here's a little look at the Florida Ridge.

Small plane almost kills Dr. Don

Sun, Apr 6 2003, 6:00:05 pm EDT

Don Netlow|Dragonfly|FAA|Kerry Lloyd|Quest Air|tow|Wallaby Ranch

I spoke with Don Netlow here today at Quest Air after he and Brian flew from Wallaby Ranch. He stated that while on tow behind Kerry Lloyd (piloting the Dragonfly) between the Ranch and highway 27 a small plane came within 15 feet of him and Kerry coming in from behind under his left wing and Kerry’s also. The plane was flying from west to east (as I recall) and Don says there were about ten hang gliders in the air over the Ranch.

Don would like to see a designation on the FAA sectionals for the Ranch.

I thought that I would tone this one up a little, just to tweak a few noses.

Water into Wine

Thu, Nov 21 2002, 7:00:04 pm GMT

Kerry Lloyd

On Wednesday I landed in a field next to a river, and unlike every other river that I’ve seen west of the Great Dividing Range that water was flowing fast and furious. While in the air I had seen the lakes to the east and it was clear from the flow in the river that the dam operators were releasing water from the lakes to feed the Cudgeegong river.

It is extremely dry here and it was quite shocking to see all this water flowing by and covering the roots of most of the trees in the river bed. But around Mudgee you will find vast seas of green vineyards floating a few feet above the parched land. Between the foliage and the ground a network of thin black plastic pipes carry the water to the drip irrigation nozzles at the root of each grape vine. Around the roots, not even a hint of green.

Mudgee is a big wine producing area less than four hours from Sydney and wine is a high priority agricultural product on the government’s agenda. As an export item it ranks up there with coal and gold. But unlike these other two it is a value added product.

But apparently the water rushing out of the dam in this drought is not for the wine growers but for the cotton farmer further down stream, the very powerful owner of one of Australia’s major media outlets, Kerry Packer. By March if there is no rain, the lake will be down to 10 percent of its capacity.

Thee were a very few drops of rain today in Mudgee. There are over 40 bush fires burning in New South Wales. Many of the fire men working the bush fires are volunteers. It is their spirit of community that brings them out to help their neighbors.

Why is all this water going to cotton farming? Isn’t rice and cotton farming strip mining Australia’s most precious resource? What is more valuable, water or wine? With all of New South Wakes under water restrictions, is it possible to have a rational water policy? Or are powerful interests buying Australia’s water, while the people go dry?

Wallaby Ranch »

Christmas|cloud|Exxtacy|food|George Ferris|Kerry Lloyd|Malcolm Jones|Wallaby Ranch

Belinda and I are at Wallaby Ranch. We arrived here on Wednesday (January 20th). Three great days of flying before the rains today. Got a 73 miler past Silver Springs the second day I was here. Yesterday showed strong winds but weak lift under great looks, but not producing cloud streets. Carlos and I only went a bit over 23 miles.

Apparently flying has been great in Florida, at least since last October, except for a few weeks around Christmas (wouldn't you know it). George Ferris was getting long flights here on his Exxtacy, just before we got here.

The Ranch now has a chef, Jerome, and he is great. Cooks two to three meals a day, and frankly it is a 100% improvement on the Wallaby Ranch as a place to hang out, not that it wasn't already great. Anything to avoid going out for breakfast, and you get to meet and sit down with everyone here. Great food.

Lots of work taking place here, with many people providing the labor. This has been a big Brazilian contingent, and that has added to the atmosphere. Even Rhett's place looks improved. Kerry Lloyd has taken over the accounting, and Quicken Books has been set up to easily track the numerous services provided by the ranch personnel.

See more below for a few tidbits on our travels to Wallaby.

Saturday there was a special 5th birthday party at the Ranch for Malcolm Jones' daughter.

Lots of five year olds, farm animals, ponies, a huge pile of sand, Jerome, the chef and his crew all dressed up, the pole barn all decked out with paper cactuses, cowboy hats for all the kids along with scarfs.

Oh yes, and the tree house out of Dr. Suess through Malcolm. A southern father dotes on his daughter.
