Belinda Boulter

Belinda and I arrived in Aukland, NZ (north island) on Thursday morning.  We then took the advice offered by our agent at Cruise New Zealand, the company providing us with a camper van, and had them book us an afternoon flight to Christchurch on the south island to begin our trip.  This should cut down significantly on our driving time and we won't have to take the ferry between the islands twice.

Today it is 20 degrees Centigrade and very marine with light rains, while yesterday it was muggy and very pleasant 28 degrees.  We head south tomorrow and should be at the New Zealand gliding center at Omarama within a few days.  More on gliding in New Zealand soon.

Gary Osoba writes:

The middle planning stage for next year's World Record Encampment at Zapata, TX is approaching.  Some of the decisions revolve around total number of anticipated participants.  Therefore, it would be good to hear from as many of you as possible who are seriously interested in attending.

As was the case last year, I want to keep this activity open to all O-classes (Para, flex, Rigid, ULS) and a mix of weekend, recreational and top competition pilots.

Right now, I have been trying to keep away from the Internet (it's after me), and can only excuse myself with the concept of "Walden Pond, 2001". As such, I would encourage those who are interested to contact David Glover («david») or the Flytec Website (www.Flytec.com) and make your intentions known.

Flytec has offered significant sponsorship again for next year and this is being considered.  I'll be coordinating with David Glover in this regard.

(editor's note: Last year I had a hard task of coordinating pilot registration for the WRE, and I'm happy to have David taking over this task.  Please contact him to express your interest.  European and other "foreign" pilots who are interested should definitely contact Dave as soon as possible.  We'd love to see you there.  Be sure to indicate when you would like to attend.  We will probably run two-week sessions again.)

G.W. Meadows «gw» writes:

After flying the Aeros Combat and negotiations with U.S. Aeros president G.W. Meadows, 2000 U.S. National Champion as well as his dog Kody have decided to join the Aeros competition team.  Bo, who has been “burning up” the competition scene for the past 2 years will fly the Aero Combat 2 in Australia this winter as well as in the U.S. during the coming year.  Bo, who has worked as a hang gliding instructor as some of the most notable hang gliding schools in the southeast for the last 15 years, has really come onto the competition scene very powerfully since devoting himself to it.

G.W., in regards to signing Bo to fly for Aeros comments: “I couldn’t be more pleased.  Bo has really hit his ‘stride’ lately and I’m happy that our agreement will have him not only flying one of the hottest new ships on the circuit, but helping us show the market the capabilities of our product.  Plus, we’re very happy to have Bo’s infectious attitude in our ranks.  When you look up ‘hang gliding junkie’ in the dictionary, there’s a picture of Bo beside it”.

Bo will be flying the new Combat 2 with the new Aeros “micro drag” control frame on it during the upcoming meets in Australia.  About the new partnership, Bo says “G.W. has been very helpful to me in the past and I’m very excited to be flying for Aeros.  I’ll be putting my best effort into the upcoming season”.

Bo joins other “Team Aeros” members Jersey Rossignol (3rd in this year’s U.S. Nationals) and Ukrainian Oleg Bondarchuk (currently ranked #2 in the world) in Australia for what will prove to be a series of hot competitions in January.

(editor's note: I really look forward to seeing all these guys in Australia and sure hope that they do well.  Oleg had indicated that he was going to cut back on competition a bit, and it is great to see him going for it. There should be plenty of foreign pilots in Australia for the three competitions, including the state –supported French national team.  I hear that Bo is already in Australia.)

I am working with Bill to clarify what the deal is with the certification and towing in Oz. Sounds like you will be able to discuss this with him directly when you visit in a few weeks.

Some of your Oz Report readers may be interested in knowing that Moyes is offering special dealer incentives on fitted options (Zoom frames, mylar sails, custom sail work, etc.) on all gliders ordered before midnight December 31, 2001.

(editor's note: I sure miss having Bill Moyes out there towing for us at the meets in Deniliquin and Hay.  It wouldn't be so bad, but there are not enough trikes available for towing to make up for his absence.  Let's up he can get this all worked out.)

Andrej at SeeYou «info» writes:

So far four flights exceeded have exceeded 2000 kilometers.  One from Ray Lynskey, which you linked to, two from Terry Delore, which were also done in New Zealand on a 15m ASW20 (I believe the longest was 2050km) and one from Klaus Ohlmann, 2463km flown in the South American Cordillere last year.

Klaus is a very special guy with incredible knowledge of the wave systems, both in the Alps and Argentina.  He spends his winters in Argentina lately, where he studies how waves can be used to set even more spectacular records.  His pilot report of the 2463km flight is found at: http://www.ifos.de/mountainwave/German/Berichte/pirep26112000.htm. Needless to say, Vector Maps for SeeYou are available to see where he was flying and what he was doing.  http://www.seeyou.ws/vectormaps-samerica.shtml.

What's even better for us at home is that we can follow what he is doing through www.onlinecontest.de So far the longest flight this year is a 1922km flight from last week.  And he is still down there.

OLC is an online XC competition where anyone with an FAI certified logger (like Colibri) can take part as long as he uploads the flight before first Tuesday after the flight.  What I'm saying is, it's great fun and it's not limited to sailplane pilots.

BTW, the two longest flights of the year are http://www.onlinecontest.de/olc-i/wertung.html: 1521km out and return on the 11/26/00 and 1922km 3 turn point flight on 11/19/00.

(editor's note: The on-line contest looks like great fun.  Perhaps hang glider pilot who don't have IGC data loggers can use G7toWin to download their Garmin recorded flights to the IGC format and post on this site.

Andrej is one of the two programmers working on SeeYou (www.seeyou.ws), my favorite flight planning and analysis program.)
