Sasha Walleczek|Stewart Midwinter|video

I've been raving about this video for quite a while now (https://OzReport.com/4.176) and everyone who has seen it has raved about it also.  I really suggest that people who have received this video, make as many copies as possible, and give them away to their friends.

Stewart Midwinter «midtoad» writes:

The gliding world has created a video to sell their sport and try to increase membership.  Maybe hang-gliding can learn from it. Their goal is impressive: to distribute 100,000 copies of the video.

Doing the same with the Red Bull speed gliding video would be a great start for us!

The original video can not be sold or purchased.  You can get it as part of a donation to a local site.

Sasha Walleczek «sasha» wrote

I read your article about the Red Bull video.  While we can’t sell the video (because of the soundtrack—there are copyright issues), we are happy to give away copies of it—for a small donation to the club that organized the Speed Run in Austria.  Just send an email to «info» to place an order (as long as supplies last).

Icaro 2000|Manfred Ruhmer

Icaro 2000 «staffbox» writes:

After two years of excellent teamwork, having produced and sold over 400 ATOS altogether, Icaro 2000 and A.I.R. have come to an arrangement regarding production and sales.  In these past years, Icaro played already an important role at A.I.R. with producing the major part of the sails, the A-frames and the keels for the ATOS and, in addition, has sold over 130 of them.  Following the principle of synergy, and in order to optimize production and deliveries, we decided to concentrate production and distribution at Icaro (Italy) and development and technical support at A.I.R (Germany).

Starting on mid-November, Icaro 2000 will assemble the ATOS at Sangiano and deliver them.  Icaro will be in charge of all related customer services for all dealers.

Against some rumors, the carbon parts will be produced by the same manufacturer and the raw materials will be from the same companies.  Their work has always been excellent, and we prefer to go on working with suppliers we can trust, in order to guarantee you and above all our customers the best quality.

Effect on customer and dealers: Due to this change the customer will gain from the efficiency of the new structure.  All ATOS dealers and distributors will receive the ATOS from Icaro at Sangiano with their reliable customer service.  Assembly and test flights can be performed at the perfect infrastructure there.  A.I.R will intensify technical support, quality and resistance control as well as new developments.

Felix Rühle, designer of the Atos (A.I.R.), will continue his research and development on the wing looking for meaningful improvements.  In addition, Manfred Ruhmer, present World and European Champion (Icaro 2000), will work with him on all future developments.  We are certain that from this dream team we can only await exceptional results!

Change for AIR dealers: All A.I.R. dealers will now be supported and supplied by Icaro with the ATOS and other products designed by A.I.R. All agreements made by A.I.R. like the sales area, prices and the product will remain the same.

There will still be both sizes available (ATOS and ATOS S). Since the ATOS has been performing in such an incredible manner (present World and European Champions fly Atos), we will not modify it for next year.  After discussing the matter we came to the conclusion that there is no market for it yet; this, however, leaves us even more time to offer you significant improvements.  All model improvements for the ATOS of 1999/2000 and for 2001 are available as retrofit, that will keep the expected high value of the glider.

Paris Williams|Robert "Bo" Hagewood|Steve Kroop

Steve Kroop «USAFlytec» writes:

Flytec USA is fund raising for Bo by selling Flytec T-shirts for $10 each on his behalf.  All proceeds go to the "Bo Down Under fund". We had a Halloween Bash at Quest and have already sold a bunch of these shirts and raised several hundred dollars.  If any of your readers are inclined to help Bo by buying a shirt they can call us at 800-662-2449.

You can contact Bo, the US National Champion at: Robert Hagewood «bokodi».

Paris Williams, who is currently ranked second in the US in the flex wing category, looks like he will be heading for Australia this January also.  He's as poor as a church mouse, just like his good friend Bo, so he's looking for help.  Contact him at «fly».

CIVL|Florida|Malcolm Jones|Quest Air|USHGA

The latest word on the spring Florida meets is that the Quest Air meet will take place on Sunday, April 15th through Saturday, 21st. The Wallaby Open is current scheduled for Saturday, April 21st through Saturday, 28th. Notice the overlap.

We've heard that the Quest Air meet is currently sanctioned by the USHGA as a Class A meet (which we assume will include CIVL sanctioning). We have also heard that talks are continuing to see about USHGA Class A sanctioning re the Wallaby Open.

I spoke with Malcolm Jones today.  He says that the Wallaby Open will receive CIVL sanctioning and pilots who fly at it may be eligible for US NTSS points.

We await further developments.

Hans Bausenwein «Hans» writes:

Yesterday I was for the first time at Jobst's and Sybilles house.  About 200 friends of Jobst were there to say a final good bye to him.

This place is a real pilots' paradise.  Everybody who has a chance to go there, should go and fly this site.  It was a late autumn day with some sunshine in between the clouds.  The wind was on and a hand full of paraglider pilots plus two hang glider pilots were soaring the 150 m ridge in front of the farmhouse in the afternoon.  The view over the green hills is beautiful.  Towards the south-west in about 30 km distance one sees the high mountains of the Alps.

Jobst's brother Vito, who runs an ultralight school in northern Germany was speaking, as well as two close friends and Sybille.  Together we were singing two songs with flying themes, which Jobst loved to sing himself a lot.

The specialists who investigated the accident came to the following conclusion:

Most likely the accident was caused because the shackle (maillon rapide) which connects the cross-spar tensioning cable with the keel of the trike wing wasn't closed properly.  Jobst did a thorough check of Sybilles trike before the flight, but probably not of his own trike.  The wing folded-up when Jobst was flying about 2km from his house at an altitude of approximately 450m (1.500ft).

He deployed his rocket parachute immediately and the altitude he had would have been plenty for a safe parachute deployment.  The rocket pulled out the parachute from its airtight plastic outer container and stretched the parachute to full length.  The deployment bag of this rocket parachute system is a tubular shaped piece of fabric that needs to be pulled off the canopy in the case of a parachute deployment.  According to the specialists who investigated the accident, the rocket wasn't powerful enough to do this.  In other words: it was defective.  I expect a statement of the manufacturer of this rescue system or his European representative will follow.

Sybille was driving to the site of the accident right after she had landed her trike next to the house.  She said when she found the wreck Jobst was sitting in the trike and the whole trike and wing showed surprisingly little damage.  The parachute in i's deployment bag was hanging over the trike like a long snake.  Jobst's body looked just normal and the expression on his face was peaceful, like he would only be sleeping.

Mourning is with the ones who stay, not with the ones who passed away.
